Brazilian football player Robinho has been sentenced to nine years in prison for sexually assaulting an Albanian girl in a disco when he played for AC Milan.

A court in the city found him guilty in absentia – Robinho is currently in Brazil where he plays for Atletico Mineiro.

Five other men were also charged with assaulting the woman in 2013, but their whereabouts are not known so their trials have been put on hold.

Robinho, whose full name is Robson de Souza, has denied the charges and since Brazil has no extradition treaty with Italy may never go to jail.

Under Italian law he can make two appeals which are likely to take many months.
