Joined by first lady Melania, he also praised the courage and professionalism of police and hospital staff following Sunday night’s attack.

At least 59 people were killed and more than 500 injured in Sunday’s mass shooting, the deadliest in modern US history.

During a speech surrounded by police officers caught up in the attack Trump said: “In the depths of horror we will always find hope in the men and women who risk their lives for ours. The mass murder that took place on Sunday night fills America’s heart with grief. America is truly a nation in mourning.”

Despite renewed efforts by members of Congress to reform the country’s gun laws following the shooting, so far the president has refused to engage in that wider discussion about gun violence in the US. During his visit to the gambling city on Wednesday, he said, “We’re not going to talk about that today”.
