Roger Federer has become the first man to win Wimbledon eight times and the oldest to lift the coveted trophy in the Open Era with his victory over Croatia’s Marin Cilic.
The Swiss third seed won 6-3 6-1 6-4 as seventh seed Cilic struggled with a blister on his left foot and broke down in tears during the second set.
Federer, finished the contest in one hour and 41 minutes to claim his first Wimbledon title since 2012.
The 35-year-old veteran confirmed his place as the greatest man ever to play the grass-court slam.
When he exited Wimbledon last year in the semi-finals, Federer spent six months out of tennis through injury. Even he had doubts over his future but his resurgence has delighted his fans:
“Unbelievable! What he has been achieving this year is unreal taking six months off. We were waiting for his 8th title since I don’t know how long. And it’s finally there!
It’s amazing!”said one woman clearly happy at the outcome.
“It’s been amazing. You know last two years we’ve seen him almost achieving greatness. And now he’s got to that level. He’s come back,“said another Federer fan.
Having delivered a 19th major title for his army of supporters Federer did all that was asked of him.
Euronews reporter Olly Racz summed up the two-week tournament:
“The 2017 Wimbledon tennis tournament will be remembered for many things but the main theme was a change of guard in the Ladies’ competition ( with victory for Garbine Muguruza over Venus Williams) and complete and utter domination of the established tennis hero in the Men’s competition.”
