Eyewitnesses recount the drama of the London tower block fire

Eyewitnesses have been speaking about the horror of the tower block fire in west London, with everyone stunned by the speed with which the 24-
storey building went up in flames.

“We just saw one side of the building, like, covered with smoke and flames, then quickly, in such a short time, it got up the whole building, it was something really…It’s like I said, you see it in the moves, not in real life,” said one woman.

Beyond the speed of the fire people noticed how it quickly spread from one area to another with apparent ease.

“It went literally up, it started firing from the outside all the way to the roof, and then all the way down. and then by then we could see a lot of children, a lot of mothers and fathers screaming for help, help, help, and putting their hands on the windows,” said another woman.

“I wasn’t sure what I was seeing, whether it was people falling out or just debris, so, I literally don’t know, but all I know is there was screaming going on all the time, I could hear shouting and screaming from here,” said one young man.

“I live opposite. I looked out of my window and I could see the whole thing, the terrible fire, I was shocked,” said a local woman. “It’s very very sad, we have to watch people inside being burned to death, and we can’t stop it.”

Local people rallied round to help survivors with volunteers filling a local church with donations, and some offering tea and sympathy to dazed former residents.
