Richard Rojas, the suspected driver of a car that ploughed into pedestrians in New York City’s Times Square, has been charged with murder in the second degree, aggravated vehicular homicide and multiple counts of attempted murder.
The US Navy veteran, 26, was taken into custody shortly after the crash, which took place at around midday local time on Thursday (May 18). An 18-year-old woman was killed in the incident and 22 people were injured.
Witnesses say the motorist mounted the pavement in a burgundy Honda sedan and sped along for over three blocks before striking a pole and coming to a standstill at 45th Street and Broadway in Midtown Manhattan.
No clear motive has been given.
