Fuel truck explosion in Mozambique kills scores of people

A fuel tanker exploded in northern Mozambique as residents gathered around it on Thursday, killing 73 people and injuring 110 others.

It is unclear if the truck had overturned the previous day and people were trying to syphon petrol from it, or the driver coming from Malawi and heading for the port of Beira, had turned off his route to sell fuel to locals when the explosion took place.

Dozens of charred bodies were scattered around the blast site in the town of Caphiridzange in Tete province, and government officials believed more bodies might be in surrounding woods, Media reported some badly burned people had tried to run into a nearby river.
