The EUYO is celebrating its fortieth year and was founded following a resolution of the European Parliament. But it is faced with closure in September due to a lack of funding from the European Union. It is seen as a cultural ambassador for the EU. It includes players from all 28 EU member states.

A change in how the orchestra is funded dating back to 2014 has resulted in the imminent closure.

A sense of shock allied to a strong determination to save the orchestra has been evident on social media from many well known media outlets.
