As Brazil’s congress voted to launch impeachment proceedings against the President Dilma Rousseff, thousands of ‘yes’ supporters exploded into celebration after watching the congressional ballot on huge screens in the capital Brasília.

The crisis surrounding the president has polarised the nation:“It’s the birth of a new Brazil, a Brazil marked by full democracy, by respect for judicial power, for our laws,” screamed one young man in the capital.

In Rio, similar crowds gathered from both sides to see the latest stage in the political drama unfold, which could see Rousseff become the second sitting president to be removed from power since the end of military rule in 1985.
