A suspected gunman – known to police – has been wounded in a shooting in the grounds of the US Capitol building in Washington.

It happened in the Visitor Centre, an underground complex used mainly by tourists, according to sources.

Police are understood to have opened fire on the man, who has not been identified. A female bystander was also wounded.

The Capitol was briefly locked down, but then re-opened.

The Senate and House of Representatives were not working and few lawmakers were in Washington.

The shooting is being described as an isolated incident and police say there’s no threat to the public.
