Toyota is to recall almost 2.9 million vehicles.

It needs to make changes to metal frames in the seats to ensure that they don’t cut through the vehicles’ seat belts if there is a crash.

Apparently this has happened twice to rear seat belts, but it’s not clear if that resulted in any injuries or fatalities.

The world’s biggest-selling carmaker says that the global recall involved RAV4 SUVs produced between July 2005 and August 2014 and sold worldwide. Of those, 625,000 are in Europe, 1.3 million are in North America, 434,000 in China, 177,000 in Japan and 307,000 in other regions.

The Vanguard model – which is sold only in Japan – is also affected.

Toyota said it would add resin covers to the cushion frames on all affected vehicles to prevent any metal pieces from cutting the seat belts.
