Japan has sent survey teams to a volcanic island forming 1,000 kilometres south of Tokyo. Nishinoshima is slowing growing in size as its active volcano spews molten rock onto its surrounding shorelines.
Less than two years ago it measured 200 metres across. It’s now as much as 2.7 square kilometres. It’s not possible yet to land on the island because of volcanic activity.
