Despite leading the Spanish club to their 10th European Cup last season, this year they were knocked out by Juventus in the Champions League semi-finals, and pipped by rivals Barcelona to La Liga.

Real Madrid’s President Florentino Perez said the decision to sack Ancelotti had not been an easy one:

“Obviously we have analysed this from all possible angles, but as I said, this position is not easy and neither is that of my colleagues from the board of directors. So if we are aware that we need a new impulse , we are responsible for finding it .”

Real did win the European Super Cup and the Club World Cup this season but Ancelotti’s failure to win any of the three trophies that make up the traditional treble (The Champions League, La Liga and the King’s Cup) was deemed unacceptable.

The decision to let Ancelotti go is not proving popular among supporters or players but the move just proves how much pressure there is on managers at the top of the game.

Ancelotti won 4 trophies last season. He ended Real's wait for their 10th CL and now he has been sacked after 1 trophyless season? Pathetic

Current thinking has former Liverpool and Chelsea boss Rafael Benitez as favourite to replace him.
