Defenders of the measures say they aim to provide free open access, with all traffic treaty equally; a concept known as net neutrality.
FCC Chairman, Tom Wheeler said “this is no more a plan to regulate the Internet than the First Amendment is a plan to regulate free speech. The action that we take today is about the protection of internet openness.”
Critics, however, argue that internet service providers should be able to charge consumers for faster speeds and block or slow access to a website.
President Obama has welcomed the move, predicting it will “protect innovation and create a level playing field for the next generation of entrepreneurs.”
