Striking police officers brought much of the Italian capital Rome to a standstill on Thursday (February 12).

Thousands gathered in solidarity with the large number of officers who phoned in sick on New Year’s Eve – 80 percent of those scheduled to work, although unions representing the officers dispute that figure.

The so-called blue flu came amid growing complaints by police over working conditions and cutbacks.
