"The Emoji Movie": Text message film is trashed by critics

An animated film based on text message characters was always going to struggle to impress the critics.

But “The Emoji Movie” has come in for a sensational slating, described variously as ‘“calamitous”, a “soul-crushing disaster” and “a force of insidious evil”.

For an idea of the onslaught, try this review from Charles Bramesco in ‘The Guardian’.

Or how about this critical panning from Alonso Duralde in ‘The Wrap’.

And all despite the vocal talents, among others, of funnymen James Corden and T.J. Miller, Shakespearean actor Patrick Stewart – who plays a “poop” emoji – and musical superstar Christina Aguilera.

So have the reviewers got it all wrong?

Why not go and see “The Emoji Movie” for yourself to find out if it really does fall flat on its face?

The Sony Pictures film is released over the summer and into autumn around the world.
