Thousands of people gathered for an evening of live music, dance and entertainment, with performances by some of the country's best-known singers and dancers.

International artists also appeared on stage, including British soprano Sarah Brightman, Italian tenor Alessandro Safina and Spanish tenor José Carreras.

The programme combined live performances with large-scale stage production, including 3D projections, lighting effects and robotic performances.

The celebrations culminated in a drone show above New Tashkent, with hundreds of drones forming moving images and patterns in the night sky.

The event was held at the new city's main celebration area, surrounded by recently opened educational and cultural institutions, as Uzbekistan prepared to mark its Independence Day on 1 September.
