Amazon founder Jeff Bezos and Lauren Sanchez’s upcoming wedding in Venice has sparked a wave of protests from environmental and local activist groups.
Greenpeace, along with the British group “Everyone Hates Elon,” joined the demonstrations on Monday by unfurling a banner in St. Mark’s Square reading, “If you can rent Venice for your wedding you can pay more tax."
The protests, part of a broader “No Space for Bezos” movement—a reference to Sanchez’s recent spaceflight—have included banners on iconic landmarks like the Rialto Bridge and San Giorgio bell tower, as well as posters around the city.
The movement brings together housing advocates, anti-cruise ship campaigners, and student groups, all criticizing Venice’s prioritization of tourism over local residents.
Greenpeace said the protest aimed to highlight billionaire tax avoidance and the environmental impact of luxury lifestyles. Despite backlash from activists, local officials have welcomed the high-profile wedding.
The wedding will take place from 24-26 June, though some reports have claimed it could be from 26-29 June.
