Flowers and candles laid by the public at the site of the shooting

Video. Flowers mark scene of Oldenburg shooting as calls for justice grow

Updated:

Flowers and candles have been laid at the scene where a 21-year-old man was shot dead by police in the German city of Oldenburg in the early hours of Sunday morning.

The man, named as Lorenz A., was reportedly sprayed irritant gas before officers opened fire, discharging at least four shots.

Initial reports suggesting that "he had threatened police with a knife" have not been substantiated. Authorities now say it remains unclear whether officers believed the young black man was armed at the time.

An autopsy has confirmed that Lorenz A. was shot from behind, raising further questions about the use of force. “The autopsy results raise serious questions and devastating allegations that must be ruthlessly answered,” said Lower Saxony’s Interior Minister Daniela Behrens.

A large protest is planned for 25 April, with the community calling for full transparency and a thorough overhaul of policing tactics. The case has sparked fresh debate over racial bias and police accountability in Germany.
