Palm tree in the middle of Lake Yasmina, Morocco, 17 October 2024

Video. No Comment: lakes back in the Moroccan desert

Updated:

Lake Yasmina, in Merzouga, Morocco, has not had such a high water level since the 1970s and 1980s. Long years of drought had almost caused it to disappear completely.

This natural phenomenon occurs during seasonal rains, although prolonged periods of drought have previously dried up these bodies of water.

The recent storm that violently hit Morocco, killing several people and causing significant material damage, has refilled these lakes, attracting migratory birds and encouraging the growth of new plants.

Meteorologists predict that an increase in humidity due to evaporation from the seas and oceans could lead to more frequent storms, transforming the climate of this desert region.
