From the mythical walls of Troy to the ancient vineyards of Bozcaada, Çanakkale's history stretches back thousands of years and still shapes daily life in this corner of Türkiye today.
Çanakkale's story begins at Troy, where ten cities were built one atop another over 4,000 years. "It lies right between Asia and Europe... a point where Eastern and Western cultures intersect," says archaeologist Enes Can. Nearby, the Troy Museum charts that layered past, visitors move "from the Early Bronze Age to the present day," says director Sinem Düzgören.

A short ferry ride away, the island of Bozcaada carries its own ancient thread: winemaking, traced back to vessels found in 2000 BC necropolis excavations. "Wine on Bozcaada dates back to very ancient times," says vintner Osman Mehmet Talay. Grown from native Çavuş, Vasilaki and Kuntra grapes, the island's wine is proof that here, history is still something you can taste.
