As parliamentary activity pauses for the summer recess, we look back at some of the debates of the season. This special edition revisits some of the most pressing questions facing the EU: how should Europe defend itself in an unstable world, and how should it respond to conflicts beyond its borders?

With Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine reshaping the continent's security landscape, MEPs Riho Terras (EPP) and Martin Schirdewan (The Left) go head-to-head over whether Europe should continue increasing military investment, and who should ultimately pay the bill.

The discussion continues with another heated exchange between Austrian MEP Lukas Mandl (EPP) and Belgian MEP Marc Botenga (The Left), who offer sharply contrasting visions of Europe's defence priorities, military capabilities, and long-term security strategy.

Spanish Socialist MEP Hana Jalloul and Austrian EPP MEP Reinhold Lopatka debate the role the European Union should play in an increasingly volatile Middle East. Meanwhile, Estonian former General and MEP Riho Terras and German MEP Özlem Demirel join The Ring to discuss how Europe should respond to escalating regional tensions, balancing security concerns with diplomacy.

From defence budgets to foreign policy, this episode of The Ring brings together some of the season's most memorable exchanges, highlighting the difficult choices Europe faces in an increasingly uncertain geopolitical environment.

This episode of The Ring is hosted by Méabh Mc Mahon and is produced by Luis Albertos Altarejos and Amaia Echevarria and edited and directed by Vassilis Glynos.
