MEPs have backed an EU deal to cooperate more closely with Cuba.

The agreement envisages closer economic ties, but some parliamentarians raised concerns about the government’s human rights record.

It comes as US president Donald Trump is taking a tough line on the communist ruled country.

The vote in the Strasbourg, France, legislature was 567-65 in favor of the deal, with 31 abstentions.

The non-binding resolution urged the EU to assist “the economic and political transition in Cuba” including towards “democratic standards”.
