More than 12,000 people have signed a petition urging EU officials not to grant an extended licence to a widely-used weedkiller.

Glyphosate is a herbicide that has been accused of causing cancer in humans.

But a joint UN World Health Organisation panel has contested the claim that glyphosate is carcinogenic.

Those findings come as an EU committee mulls whether to grant glyphosate an extended licence.

The product is used in a number of best-selling weed killers worldwide.

Its current European licence expires on 30th June.
