Journalist György Kakuk documents refugee journey deep into Europe

Hungarian journalist György Kakuk, who initially did not reveal his name, joined refugees traveling north from the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia to the Serb-Hungarian border.
These people or most of these people never wanted to leave their home countries. But the homelands they escaped from have become places where living was impossible.
His journey started while he was in Greece on a family holiday. When his family returned to Hungary, he embarked on a journey along the dangerous refugee trail.
Kakuk wanted to experience the reality first-hand because refugees are a much-discussed topic in Hungary.
“The countries along the Balkan Way seem to have washed their hands of this massive immigration,” said Kakuk. “The only goal of the Greeks, Macedonians and Serbs is to help these people across their countries easily and quickly because they want to get rid of them.”
Most people taking the route to Serbia’s border with Hungary are refugees who have fled conflict and upheaval in Iraq and Syria.
Being trafficked has become a way of life, often in the dead of night.
“I thought that a refugee is a worn-out, disheveled, dirty person, but that’s not true,” continued Kakuk.
“These people or most of these people never wanted to leave their home countries. But the homelands they escaped from have become places where living was impossible.”
For most refugees, their journey will continue north until they reach Hungary. Many have their sights set on a future in Switzerland or Germany.
