The European commission accused six Hollywood studios and one British broadcaster on Thursday (July 23) of violating rules governing the single European market.
By selling films and programming on a country-by-country basis, competition regulators say that Disney, NBCUniversal, Paramount Pictures, Sony, Twentieth Century Fox and Warner Bros. are preventing the free flow of commerce and trade across the EU.
Sky TV is also under fire as the content the studios license to the British broadcaster is restricted to its pay-TV customers within the UK and Ireland.
“European consumers want to watch the pay-TV channels of their choice regardless of where they live or travel in the EU,” European Competition Commissioner, Margrethe Vestager said in a statement released by her office.
Other European broadcasters under investigation on similar charges include Canal Plus of France, Sky Italia and Sky Deutschland.
