The EU is to increase financial aid to the Central African Republic, officials said on Tuesday.

The European Commission announced an extra 72 million euros in fresh funding during a donor conference in the Belgian capital of Brussels.

“This additional support includes humatarian aid of 10 million euros fresh funding for humanitarian aid. so, the European Union stands by the Central African Republic and we are fully engaged in supporting it to address the major challenges ahead,” said Neven Mimica
European Commissioner for International Cooperation and Development.

The country has been wracked by sectarian violence since a coup more than two years ago that saw mainly Muslim rebels fight against Christian vigilantes.

CAR’s interim president, Catherine Samba-Panza, said organising fresh elections are a “priority.”

“We, with the European Union, have faced humanitarian emergencies. but now it’s time to go beyond the humanitarian emergency and to really lift up the the population. we have a many refugees inside the Central African republic, many displaced people in neighboring countries,” she told reporters.

Nearly one million people had to leave their homes during the fighting.

More than half of the country’s four million people require humanitarian assistance, according to the Norwegian Refugee Council.
