New cars and light vans will have to be fitted with devices that will automatically alert rescue services when a vehicle crashes from 2018.

It follows a decision by MEPs in Strasbourg; the goal is to improve road safety across the EU.

Officials reckon it will reduce the number of road deaths by 10 per cent a year.
