For thousands of migrants seeking a secure and stable life in the UK Calais is a magnet. The port city in northern France is seen as a gateway to a new world, the last leg of a long and arduous journey. But for most, life in the squalid camps that have sprung up around Calais life is an unending nightmare.
Since the closure of the Sangatte reception centre there is little or no state provision for migrants’ needs. They survive on their wits, charity and in some cases, petty crime.
In this edition of Reporter Valerie Gauriat meets some of those who have fled conflict and tyranny in the hope of finding a better life. She also hears from an exasperated local French community. Both sides are united in their anger over systemic failures in Europe that perpetuate this human tragedy.
