Thousands of desperate migrants continue to undertake the relatively short but highly dangerous voyage from north Africa to southern Europe, undeterred by the knowledge that many before them have lost their lives.

An upsurge in conflict and instability in the Middle East and north Africa has seen the number of migrants heading to Europe soar in recent years. Now, last year’s record is on course to be surpassed in 2015. In this special edition of On The Frontline Paul Hackett asks what is being done to tackle this humanitarian crisis?

The programme features a location report from Simona Volta on the small Italian island of Lampedusa, which is struggling to cope with the volume of migrants arriving on its shores. Paul gets the views of Fabrice Leggeri, the Director of the EU’s border agency Frontex and Eugenio Ambrosi, from the International Organization for Migration.
