From the catwalk to the sidewalk: emerging trends at Moscow Fashion Week
Plastic raincoat, lamé all over and casual tailoring. Here is your recap of the biggest fashion trends spotted in Russia today.
ADVERTISEMENTDay 3 of the Fashion Week in Moscow included shows from Julian Dalakian, a veteran from this event who shows her collections every season since the first edition in 2000, Anastasia Dokuchaeva and Atelier B by Gala Borzova, a former stylist turned designer. The fashion world was saddened by the loss of Haute-Couture designer Hubert de Givenchy who passed away at the age of 91. During our first stop to catch the best street-style of the day, we took a moment to talk about this disparition to the people of Moscow who were moved by the news.
The Russian street style scene graced us with colourful and comfy outfits
We then caught some inspiring street style looks in front of Manège, the fashion week exhibition space located minutes from the Red Square. Or what I call a lesson in (very cold) winter wear, although - brace yourselves - it's already Spring in Moscow. With temperature flirting with minus degrees and regular snowfalls, they success in looking both warm and stylish stylish by practicing smart layering, including fur or faux fur into their outfits and wearing bright oversized puffer jackets. Atelier B by Gala B: a cheeky maid meets a graceful ballerina under an umbrella
In case of rain, turn to Atelier B by Gala B. She has you covered. Her collection was a playful reinterpretation of the transparent raincoat that the designer turned inside out. This trend was also spotted outside Manège worn by street style experts. So how to style it according to this show? There is no limit to its versatility.
As thigh high boots under a denim skirt or lace pants, on your head as a headscarf, or as long sleeves to complete a peach ruffled dress. Plastic is, indeed, fantastic.
White feathers was another motif of this show: first as an enormous white coat (why not, it looks comfy) or as decoration around the neck, a hood or an umbrella. It’s still raining remember.
Julia Dalakian: lamé dresses, tailoring and sparkling details
Julia Dalakian is a favourite from the Fashion Week in Moscow. For the past eighteen years, season after season, she keeps showing her collections on this particular runway. Before the show I had a chance to chat with her about her inspiration - “my feelings” she said - and the fact that she is proud of witnessing the growth of the fashion industry in Russia and the fashion week getting more and more “professional”.
Her show ended with dozens of flower bouquet handed to her by her fans sitting in the front row. As for the collection, I captured this lamé gown with deep decolleté, which was particularly gorgeous. Spot the segment on the video above the article.
Anastasia Dokuchaeva: youthful, futuristic and eye-catching
Have you ever wondered how a sexy construction worker from outer space would look like? Dokuchaeva just gave us a version. She would see the world in technicolour thanks to her special rainbow lenses and be at all time prepared with her maxi security belt cinching a bodycon dress worn with practical hiking boots.
She would not be afraid of far-fetched mixes such as a strapless corduroy dress worn on top of a lamé powder blue suit. This fun combination of playful style and strong tailoring was really eye-catching and simply cosmical. We asked 5 questions to Dokuchaeva.
Q1. Can you tell us a little bit about you and how you became a designer?
“I’m 28 years old. I don’t know how I became a designer; I think it was fate. I have been sewing my whole life and when it became my work - and my hobby as well -, I became a designer”.
Q2. How would you define the Dokuchaeva look?
“The Wow-effect is the main characteristic of all my clothes.”
Q3. What is the general spirit and highlight pieces of your A/W 18-19 collection?
“The general spirit and highlight pieces of our collections, from season to season, are the unusual colour use and mix. For autumn-winter, sport spirit prevails. I don’t put a general spirit or idea into each collection because I believe that it is a limitation of myself and what I can do.”
Q4. I see that you are on Instagram. What are the best fashion accounts to follow according to you?
“I love pics by Delpozo, Plastik Magazine and more recently Elizaveta Porodina’s account, I think she’s my photographer, she doesn’t know it yet!”
Q5. What are your fashion essentials?
“Pumps, round red glasses, red nail polish and red lipstick, wrap-dress and red eco-fur coat. I feel great with these!”
