If you're looking for a place to go this summer and escape the worries of everyday life, we've got you covered. However, before you book a ticket, there is just one small problem...

Times are hard. The job market is a minefield, the political climate seems to be getting worse every day, and on top of that, Europe is currently grappling with a heatwave.

Faced with this dire state of affairs, a disconnect is needed. Why not book a holiday to unwind? We've got just the place...

It is one of Gen Z's favourite destinations and celebrities seem to love it.

Have you heard of Floptropica?

It's a democracy (always appreciated), its GDP is the 3rd largest in the world, with a population of just 10 million. Granted, like every country, it has gone through some challenges, like wars, but you try finding somewhere free of political strife these days.

Sold on the location? Before booking your tickets, we have to level with you: Floptropica can't be found on any map.

It's the modern equivalent of an imaginary happy place for chronically online people, a fantasyland created and maintained by TikTok users. And you can enjoy it too. Just not physically.

What's in a name?

The country's name speaks for itself as it is made up of "flop" and "tropics", but let's walk you through it...

The word "flop" was quickly adopted by social media users, especially by the fandom community that usually focuses on music, movies and shows – the "Twitter stan".

With the rapid development of social media and discontent about Elon Musk's ownership of X, the fandoms spread online. TikTok is considered to be the place where the so-called "Floptok" began.

Floptok refers to the content created by young online users about the artists and events that are in their "flop era" (referring to a period of decline in one's life) - something famous singers like Billie Eilish and Zara Larsson have acknowledged before.

An established fake country

What started as a niche meme quickly grew into a massive community online that has been contributing to an ever-expanding lore.

The history of the country itself, often inconsistent as anyone can contribute to it, is too dense to go into. However, we will briefly go into that conflict we mentioned earlier... The Flops, or Floptropicans, had a war with another country called DaBoyz. TikTok users created this country as a form of exile for certain public figures like Andrew Tate, John Cena and Bashar al-Assad.

Previously an honoured member, Nicki Minaj has also been banned from Floptropica due to controversial statements regarding the LGBTQIA+ community.

Now that's over, here are some hopefully helpful broad strokes to get to know Floptropica better...

The non-existing country has its own government, defence structure, news, and even website. There are seven "official langauges" – ones which are spoken in the real world (English, Spanish and Portuguese), but also some made-up ones, including Flopa, Chinass, Wetnamese and Potaxie.

It is made up of eight states with corresponding voting zones. Yes, even fictional countries have elections.

According to the Floptropica government's official website, the President of the imaginary country is Deborah Ali-Williams.

Originally the director of a funeral home in Houston, Texas, United States, Ali-Williams rose to fame quickly as internet users found her composure, organisation and fashion choices outstanding. Having seen how the director ran the funeral home, the Floptropicans decided to "elect" her as president.

Deborah Ali-Williams plays into the whole lore via her TikToks and Instagram Reels.

There is also a Queen, whose name is Jiafei Dai. But because things can't be simple, you ought to know that she is AI-generated. Regardless, the country seems to take great pride in their Queen and strives to protect her at all costs.

The states are run by celebrities. For instance, Cvmberty Island is run by TV host Wendy Williams and CupcakKia by rapper and singer-songwriter Elizabeth Eden Harris (better known as CupcakKe).

Some other notable mentions include Kris Jenner as Secretary of Cultural Affairs and American media personality and artist JoJo Siwa as Secretary of Environmental Sustainability. Quite what credentials these two have to occupy those key posts remains something of a mystery...

The states have institutions and businesses as well – just like in the real world. There is Flop Mobile Group, Yassifisoft, Vodafone Floptropica, University of Servington, Flopwagen, Jet69, Flopvision and Burger Queen – to name but a few.

If this all sounds like a country you would like to be a citizen of, there is no need to go through a dull bureaucratic process. One can get an "official" passport, along with the state's merchandise, on the country's official website.

Floptropica's impact on society

You might be wondering: "What is the point of this charade?".

Honestly, nobody can tell. Some believe it's something that helps younger generations disconnect from reality; others dismiss it as just another silly online trend.

However, one thing which cannot be denied is its impact on both the internet and pop culture. Many TikTok accounts about Floptropica have several million followers, and a growing number of public personas are speaking about this phenomenon - including Italy's Corbetta mayor Marco Ballarini, and FlixBus.

Ultimately, if satirising the real world, celebrity culture and meme history allow people to disconnect and have a bit of fun, especially during troubled times, who's to complain?

The fantasyland continues to evolve, and maybe a short trip to Floptropica could be therapeutic. And who knows? Maybe JoJo Siwa does have some decent environmental sustainability policies...
