The hip-hop stage biography is about an orphan immigrant from the Caribbean who rises to the highest ranks of American society.
It is based on Ron Chernow’s 800-page biography.
Actor and creator Lin-Manuel Miranda has been reflecting on his inspiration.
“You know, it’s funny when I picked up Ron’s (Chernow) book, I googled it because I said, ‘Someone’s surely done this already,’” he said.
“Hamilton’s life is a life you have to work very hard to make boring. It’s got everything. It’s got sex, it’s got politics, it’s got genius and so you know I’m just thrilled that I finished the thing.”
The creator’s father – a New York political consultant and activist – says he is thrilled “Hamilton” is getting people talking.
“I wish I could have made politics cool,” said Luis Miranda.
“It took a generation later for that to happen and I am delighted that politics is now cool, that ‘Hamilton,’ it’s a household name for so many kids and that history is again becoming an important subject for kids to learn about.”
The Pulitzer win could just be the start of it all for ‘Hamilton.’ Many in the theatre industry already think a sweep at the Tony Awards is a foregone conclusion.
The production has grossed more than 60 million dollars and sealed the highest advance ticket sales in Broadway history.
