Leonardo recorded a 28% increase in orders in the first nine months of 2026. The Italian group is focusing on defence, aerospace, drones and new industrial partnerships, while the acquisition of Iveco Group's Defence division has strengthened its position.
Leonardo has received orders exceeding 60 billion euros for the first time, the company said in a statement released on Thursday.
"The results for the first nine months of 2026", which also include rising revenues in all the sectors in which the Italian group is active in defence and aerospace, "confirm the soundness of our development path, characterised by financial solidity, a strong commercial proposition, the breadth of our offering and the expansion of our production capacity", said Lorenzo Mariani, Chief Executive Officer and General Manager of Leonardo.
"We are working to further improve our capabilities in order to translate the strength of the order backlog into greater production and delivery capacity", Mariani added, "as required by the current reference scenario".
The 28 per cent increase in orders (compared with the same period last year, to a total of 60.4 billion) and the other results for the first three quarters of this year, approved on Wednesday at a meeting of the Board of Directors, also open up prospects for the immediate future.
"The integration and digitalisation of platforms, the development of industrial partnerships and targeted M&A activity are the foundations of the strategic plan that will make it possible", the head of Leonardo further commented in the company statement (source in Italian), "to play a central role in the new configuration of the international AD&S industry and to strengthen our positioning so we can respond to market developments".
Among the projects pointing in this direction, Mariani explicitly mentioned the one for the new GCAP fighter aircraft, the joint ventures with Rheinmetall and Baykar for new vehicles and drones, the alliance with Airbus and Thales to create a European operator in space and the technological development of the Michelangelo Dome.
The increase in the order backlog was generated in part (by around 6 billion euros) through the acquisition of Iveco Group's Defence division, which Leonardo completed last March.
Leonardo is a listed company in which the Italian state holds a stake through the Ministry of Economy and Finance.
