While the frontlines lie far to the east, Lviv hosts the Field of Mars at Lychakiv Cemetery, where rows of Ukrainian flags mark the graves of fallen soldiers from the region. Many of those buried here are young, their lives ended shortly after they began.
The cemetery expands steadily as more are laid to rest, each farewell a reminder that distance offers no escape from grief.
Lviv also became the site where European leaders backed the creation of a tribunal to prosecute alleged Russian war crimes, seen by many as a small step towards justice amid the continuing loss.
