Video. Cows airlifted as Swiss village evacuated over rockslide fears

Updated:

Dozens of cows have been airlifted from an Alpine village in southern Switzerland as geologists warn of an imminent rockslide.

The village of Blatten, home to around 300 people in the Loetschental valley, was cleared on Tuesday after experts detected signs of unstable terrain above the area.

Evacuations included 52 cows, some of which were moved by foot or vehicle, while others were hoisted out by helicopter. Access to hiking trails in the region has also been restricted.

Authorities say the slope above the village is showing signs of movement, and monitoring equipment has been installed.
