Sirens echoed across Israel on Wednesday (May 8) as the country came to a standstill to mark Memorial Day.

During two minutes, at 11 a.m. Israelis halted to honour the memories of fallen soldiers and victims of terrorism.

Bereaved families visited cemeteries of fallen loved ones and attended memorial ceremonies.

At sundown the country transitions from sorrow to the celebration and marks its 71st Independence Day.
