Following a regular monetary policy meeting the European Central Bank President Mario Draghi has held a press conference to give his reaction to the proposed US tariffs on steel and aluminium.

He said unilateral trade policies were dangerous, and said multilateral agreements were the best way to resolve disputes.

"There is a certain I would say worry or concern about the state of international relations because if you put up tariffs against what are your allies, one wonders who the enemies are," he said.

President Donald Trump has often accused Europe of protectionism, but Draghi chose to mount another horse on International Womens' Day to respond to crticisms the ECB is a mens' club.

"Now, on what you said, certainly I think the gender balance ought to be improved and this ought to happen at all levels," he admitted.

By the end of 2019, the ECB aims to have 35 percent of middle and 28 percent of top management posts filled by "qualified women".
