Britain’s Prince Harry and his American girlfriend Meghan Markle made their first formal public appearance together on Monday.

The couple held hands and watched a wheelchair tennis match at the Invictus Games in Toronto.

They appeared relaxed, turning around to chat with spectators behind them.

They had both appeared at the opening ceremony at the weekend but sat apart and were not photographed together.

Have they been dating long?

Yes, more than a year.

The couple’s step into the public eye is likely to fuel speculation that marriage is on the horizon.

Complaints about the press

Last November, Harry criticised the press for subjecting Markle to “a wave of abuse and harassment” after the news of their relationship sparked a stream of stories about the 36-year-old actress in British newspapers.

This included comment pieces which Harry complained had a racial tone.

Markle, a divorcee, is a native of Los Angeles whose father is white and mother African-American.

She told Vanity Fair magazine earlier this month that she and Harry were in love, her first direct comments about the relationship.
