Atletico Madrid came out strong in their last-ever Champions League match at the Vicente Calderón Stadium.

With a goal from Saúl and a penalty from Griezmann within the first 16 minutes, the Mattressers looked promising. The semi-final score was narrowed down to 2-3 on aggregate in Real Madrid’s favour, leading English football veteran Gary Lineker to describe the match as “wonderfully mental.”

But the Red-and-Whites’ hopes were dashed when Real midfielder Isco scored a 41st-minute goal, putting the score at 1-2 on the night, but 4-2 on aggregate. The away goals rule meant Atletico would have had to score a mammoth five goals in Wednesday’s match (May 10) to earn a place in the final.

Real will go through to the June 3 final in Cardiff against Juventus.
