British retailers mostly report strong sales over the crucial end-of-year holiday period but are not sure if this heralds a recovery.

Despite the Brexit vote it wasn’t a Ho-Ho-hopeless holiday season for British retailers.

UK shoppers were spend, spend, spending – in the main – at the crucial time of year which is traditionally the most lucrative for stores.

Supermarkets were big winners. Tesco, the UK’s largest, enjoyed strong sales as did its rivals Sainsburys and Morrisons, along with the discount chains Aldi and Lidl.

Marks and Spencer reported its best Christmas in six years.

But most of the retailers said they were cautious about the months ahead, not sure if this heralds a recovery and worried about the weaker pound pushing up prices.
