At least 22 people have been killed and dozens wounded when a suicide bomber detonated an explosive vest at a Kurdish wedding in the city of Hasakah.

The attack happened in the village of Safya.

Prominent figures from the Kurdish community had been invited.

The explosion happened at 9 pm local time.

More than 100 people were attending the wedding of a local family, according to local reports. Up to 90 people are said to have been injured.

ISIL has reportedly claimed responsibility for the attack.

Fierce fighting erupts in Damascus

Fierce fighting has erupted between the Syrian Army and opposition fighters in the Al-Ghouta neighbourhood of Damascus.

The government-controlled Syrian Central Military Media released footage it says shows advancing Syrian government troops in the western neighbourhood of Al-Darkhabiya.
