United States‘ swimmer Katie Ledecky has won gold in the women’s 400 metre freestyle at the Rio Olympics.

United States‘ swimmer Katie Ledecky has won gold in the women’s 400 metre freestyle at the Rio Olympics.

The 19-year-old set a new mark of 3 minutes and 56.46 seconds, beating her own world record of 3 minutes and 58.37 seconds set in Australia two years ago.

Britain’s Jazz Carlin won a silver medal, and fellow US swimmer, Leah Smith, took bronze.

Ledecky described her win as “pure happiness.”
