Franz Beckenbauer one of six facing corruption probe into 2006 World Cup

Fifa’s ethics committee opened proceedings after reviewing an inquiry carried out by the German Football Association.
The German weekly Der Spiegel published a piece alleging a 6.7m slush fund was used to purchase votes.
This is something the German Football Association denies.

Four of the six, including Beckenbauer, are to investigated for possible undue payments, two others face allegations of a failure to report a breach of Fifa’s ethics.

Germany won the right to host the tournament by beating South Africa by one vote in 2000.
The others at the centre of the probe are.
Wolfgang Niersbach: Former president of the German Football Association and current member of the Fifa and Uefa executive.
Helmut Sandrock: Former secretary general of the German Football Association.
Theo Zwanziger: Former president of the German Football Association, and former member of the Fifa and Uefa executive committees.
Horst Schmidt: Former secretary general of the German Football Association.
Stefan Hans: Former chief financial officer of the German Football.
