Liverpool qualified for the quarter-finals of the Europa League on Thursday evening after beating arch rivals Manchester United in the sides’ first encounter in Europe.

The second leg at Old Trafford ended one all but Liverpool advanced to the next stage 3-1 aggregate winners.

Elsewhere Sparta Prague progressed to the last eight of Europe’s second tier competition. They beat Lazio 3-0 in Rome boosting the Czech team’s aggregate victory to 4-1.

Borussia Dortmund cruised into the quarter-finals at the expense of Tottenham – a 2-1 victory in London put the Germans through 5-1 on aggregate.

Athletic Bilbao beat Gary Neville’s Valencia on the away goals rule, while Villarreal, Shakhtar Donetsk, Sevilla and Braga also made it through to the last eight.
