China’s Ma Jianfei produced a stunning performance to edge out England’s Richard Kruse in the final of the Turin Grand Prix on Sunday.
Kruse, who was part of the British fencing team that stunned reigning champions Italy to win an improbable European Games gold in the men’s foil team competition in Baku in July, overcame an injury to put his opponent under pressure throughout the contest.
The 32-year-old beat Lee Kwang-hyun in the semis but wasn’t able to go all the way with Jianfei eventually prevailing 15-11 in the showpiece match.
