Republic will have to rely on the play-offs to get to France after they failed to get past Poland in their Group D qualifier.

Goals from Grzegorz Krychowiak and Robert Lewandowski gave victory to Poland and dented Martin O’Neill’s teams hopes of automatic qualification.

In Group F, Craig Cathcart’s first-half goal was cancelled out with a late equaliser from Paulus Arajuur as Finland held Northern Ireland to a 1-1 draw in Helsinki.

Two goals from Constantin Budescu and one from Alexandru Maxim saw Romania beat Faroe Islands 3-0 while Greece edged Hungary in a seven-goal thriller in Athens.

Aleksandar Kolarov and Nemanja Matic saw red in Portugal’s 2-1 victory over Serbia. Goals by Nani and Joao Moutinho kept the Portuguese, who qualified comfortably, on top of their group.

Armenia’s Kamo Hovhannisyan scored an own goal as his side lost 3-0 to Albania. The Albanians scored twice through Berat Djimsiti and Armando Sadiku.
