Goals each side of half time by Georginio Wijnaldum and Wesley Sneijder left the door ajar.

But Turkey’s 2-0 win against the Czech Republic means the Dutch need Turkey to drop points in their final match.

Holland are fourth in the table behind group leaders Iceland in Group A.

In Group B Wales lost 2-0 to Bosnia-Herzegovina courtesy of goals by Milan Djuric and Vedad Ibisevic. But the Welsh qualified comfortably in second place after Israel lost 2-1 against Cyprus.

Belgium stuck four past Andorra to beat the principality 4-1 and seal top spot in the Group.

Badavi Guseinov saw red in Italy’s 3-1 victory over Azerbaijan. The win secures the azzuri qualification to Euro 2016 and maintains their unbeaten record in Group H.

Eder, El Shaarawy and Matteo Darmian were on target for Italy.

Goals by Tettey and Soederlund helped Norway beat Malta 2-0 while Croatia put three past Bulgaria with goals by Perisic, Rakitic and Kalinic.
