Belarusian police have been confronted by citizens of the capital Minsk over their treatment of a blind man accused of assaulting an officer.

Video of the aftermath of the incident showed the man being dragged down stairs in a Metro station, his head colliding with a metal handrail.

Passersby faced off with police over the behaviour and have now set up an online petition demanding disciplinary action from the authorities.

The 41-year-old suspect is a regular at the Metro station and witnesses said he had lashed out in confusion when two policemen had started harrassing him.

However, a police investigation reported that he had a criminal record and also became violent later at the police station.
