Eight people, including two children, have been killed when one of the deadliest fires in Paris engulfed an apartment building.

Firefighters put out a paper fire in the building around midnight. They were called back a couple of hours later to a second blaze that started on the ground floor and quickly spread to the top floor.

A witness told BFM TV she heard women and children in the building screaming “save us!” from the windows.

French President Francois Hollande
expressed his condolences to the victims and said he will make sure everything is done to investigate on the cause of the tragedy.

Police are looking into whether the fire in the 18th arrondissement was started deliberately.

The Paris mayor said the building had no previous problems and was in good condition.
