The president of Ecuador has declared a state of emergency after the giant Cotopaxi volcano showed signs of increased activity.

The move allows him to deploy security forces throughout the country.

Cotopaxi is one of the world’s highest active volcanoes, and popular with tourists.

The volcano’s last eruption happened in 1940.
